Here's how to make an online quiz: put your questions in Sparqel, start the game on a big screen, and players join by typing the PIN on their phone. They don't need to install an app or create an account, and the points add up by themselves. Never done it before? With this guide you'll be live within five minutes.
Step 1: start without an account
Go to sparqel.com and click Create a quiz. You go straight into the editor. You don't need an account yet: you work as a guest first, and your quiz is saved in this browser.
Give your quiz a title. A cover image isn't required, but it makes the quiz easy to spot in your library.
Step 2: add your questions
A new quiz starts with a Quiz question: a question with two to six answers. Type the question, fill in the answers and click Mark as correct on the right one. More than one correct answer is possible too.
For each question you set:
- Time limit: 20 seconds by default. Feel free to give a tricky question a bit more time.
- Points: up to 1000 by default, double (up to 2000) for a final question, or no points.
- Media: search for a photo or GIF, or paste a link to a YouTube or Vimeo video. You can also reveal a photo bit by bit.
Click Add question and choose the type of the next question. Five to ten questions is plenty for a first time. Besides Quiz there are twelve other question types, such as True or false, Slider and Word cloud. See what they do in the question types.
Step 3: choose how it looks
In the quiz settings you choose the language, a theme for the big screen and the phones, and the lobby music. Your changes are saved automatically.
Step 4: start the game
Click Play. Now you create a free account, with Google or your email address. Everything you made as a guest stays where it is.
Then choose the game mode:
- Classic: the faster the right answer, the more points.
- Teams: players sit in teams and talk it over first.
- No time pressure: only right or wrong counts.
The lobby appears with a PIN and a QR code. Put this screen on a projector or TV, or share it in your video call if everyone is at home.
Step 5: how do players join?
Players go to sparqel.com on their phone, type the PIN or scan the QR code and choose a name. You'll see them appear in the lobby. Once everyone is in, click Start.
For each question they tap their answer on their phone. Then you see the results, a leaderboard with the top 5 and, at the end, the podium. Up to 50 players can join at once.
What if not everyone can play at the same time?
Do people need to join whenever suits them? Then set the quiz as an assignment with a deadline. Everyone plays at their own pace, with the questions on their own screen.
What do you see afterwards?
After every game you get a report: per question, the percentage who got it right, and per player, their answers and score. You can download everything as Excel. And the quiz itself stays in your library, ready for next time.
