A quiz for your team: away day, meeting or online

Play in teams, break the ice with a word cloud and collect ideas with a brainstorm. Even when everyone works from home.

A quiz breaks the ice at a team outing, makes a long meeting feel shorter and works just as well when everyone is at home. You don't need apps or accounts: colleagues join on their phones. Here's how to get the most out of it.

Play in teams

Choose the Teams game mode when you start. You create two to six teams, each with its own colour and symbol. You can sort everyone into teams automatically, or let colleagues pick a team themselves in the lobby. Anyone who doesn't pick is assigned at the start.

What makes teams fun:

  • Team talk: if you turn it on, teams get a moment to discuss before each question. Only then can they answer.
  • Everyone plays: each team member answers on their own phone and earns their own points.
  • Fair scores: the team score is the average of its members. So a team of eight has no advantage over a team of five.

The scoreboard and the podium show the teams, and in the report you see the standings per team and per person.

As an icebreaker in a meeting

Not every question needs a right answer. Opinion questions don't give points, but they show at a glance what the group thinks:

  • A Word cloud at the start: "How are you feeling today, in one word?"
  • A Poll to make a quick decision: which date, which restaurant?
  • A Scale on a statement, from disagree to agree.
  • An NPS question after a training session or presentation: how likely are you to recommend this session?
  • An Open question for feedback that goes beyond a number.

Everyone answers at the same time, without the loudest voice steering the conversation.

Coming up with ideas together

With a Brainstorm you collect ideas from the whole group in a few minutes. Everyone sends in one to five ideas on their phone. You group them on the screen by dragging them together, and then everyone votes for the best. You can't vote for your own idea. The top 3 earn points for whoever came up with them.

Handy for planning the next team outing, or for bringing a project's bottlenecks out into the open. Afterwards, all ideas appear in the report with names, and you can download them as Excel.

Online or hybrid

Is the team working remotely? Share your screen with the game in Teams, Zoom or Meet. Colleagues watch along and answer on their phone, or in a second window on their laptop.

A few tips for online:

  • Turn on Show questions and answers on phones. A shared screen can be hard to read on a small laptop.
  • Use Autoplay, so the game moves on by itself after the results and you can keep talking.
  • Leave Reactions on: emojis floating across the screen give a bit of a room feeling, even at a distance.

How big can the group be?

Up to 50 people can join a game. Is your organisation bigger? Then play a few rounds, for example per department. Want everyone to join whenever it suits them? Then set the quiz as an assignment: colleagues play at their own pace until a deadline. Handy for a knowledge quiz after a training session or onboarding for new colleagues.

Ready in fifteen minutes

  1. Make a quiz with a few questions about the team, the company or the topic of the day.
  2. Add a word cloud as an opener and a brainstorm to finish.
  3. Start the game, choose Teams and let colleagues type in the PIN.
